Becoming
I start my quest today to blog my way through the gospels to better understand what the kingdom of God and the gospel is. I began in Matt 1-2, which told of Jesus Birth. Two things stand out to me.
1) Jesus wanted to reach humanity, so he became a human. This has, I feel, huge implications for mission. If we want to reach someone, we must become like them. We must submerse ourselves in their world so that we understand their hurts, and pains, and can identify with them. Imagine a God who could not relate to the human condition, we might feel as though he doesn't understand.
2) The condition of his birth. He was born to young, poor, people. Born in a stable, born into exile (left to Egypt). He was born as "the least of these." He could choose His birth, and His life. After all He was God. He chose to come in humility, again to reach the type of people he wanted to reach. Later it says he came to the sick, those who need a doctor. Had his main purpose have been to reach the rich, he would have been born rich. I think in doing this he gives value to those who might feel none.
